The old town and Puente de San Martín

Steep stone lanes between the cathedral and the river, ending at a fourteenth-century bridge with towers at both ends.

Route anzeigen

Toledo's old town is dense, steep and almost entirely stone — narrow lanes where three cultures built on top of each other for a thousand years. The walls are high enough that direct sun rarely reaches the ground, so it holds workable light through the middle of the day when open squares do not.

The Puente de San Martín at the western edge is the reward for walking down: a fourteenth-century bridge across the Tagus with a fortified tower at each end and the gorge below.

Everything here is uphill on the way back. Plan the route downhill and take the taxi up.

Tipps

Cobblestone and steep throughout, and Toledo is a day-trip town — coaches arrive late morning and leave mid-afternoon. Before ten and after five it is a different, much emptier place.
