The Mezquita

A mosque begun in 785, extended for two centuries, and with a cathedral built into the middle of it in the sixteenth century. What that produced is a forest of columns carrying double horseshoe arches banded in brick and stone, repeating in every direction until they disappear into the dark.

It is one of very few interiors worth building an entire session around. The repetition does the composition for you — stand anyone between the columns and the arches lead the eye to them.

The light is low and warm and comes from lamps rather than windows, so this is a place for wide apertures and steady hands rather than bright frames. Check the current rules on photography and tripods before you plan around it; they change, and a tripod is normally not permitted.
