Port de Sóller and the valley

A horseshoe harbour reached through citrus groves, joined to the town by a wooden tram that has run since 1913.

À propos Port de Sóller and the valley

Itinéraire

The Sóller valley is a bowl of orange and lemon groves surrounded by mountains, and the port at the bottom is an almost enclosed horseshoe bay. The two are joined by an open wooden tram that has been running since 1913 and is, unavoidably, a good photograph.

The bay faces roughly north-west, so it holds light late and the water stays calm when the rest of the coast does not — useful when Formentor is being blown sideways.

The town square in Sóller, with the church facade and cafés under plane trees, is a completely different register from the harbour twenty minutes away. Two locations, one short tram ride, no driving.

Late afternoon in the port; morning in the town square

Conseils

The tram runs to a timetable and fills in summer — check times rather than turning up. Parking in the port is easier than in the town.
