La Mola — the lighthouse and the old windmill

A plateau of dry-stone fields at the far end of the island, ending in a lighthouse above a vertical drop.

Über La Mola — the lighthouse and the old windmill

Route anzeigen

La Mola is the high end of Formentera, reached by a road that climbs the escarpment in a few bends. On top it is farmland: fig trees held down by props, dry-stone walls, low white houses, and the Molí Vell, a restored eighteenth-century windmill standing alone in a field.

The road ends at the lighthouse, on the cliff edge some 120 metres above the sea, with nothing beyond it but open Mediterranean. Sunrise here is the counterpart to sunset at Barbaria: the light comes off the water and hits the tower and the cliff face straight on.

El Pilar de la Mola, the village behind it, adds a small white church and a shaded square, and holds a craft market on set days in season. Combine the three — windmill, village, lighthouse — and the plateau alone fills an hour of shooting.

The cliff edge is unfenced. The market days and the windmill's opening hours are seasonal — check before building the route around them.
