About Asturias & the Picos de Europa
Asturias is the green half of Spain, and it photographs nothing like the south. The centre of it for visitors is Covadonga: a neo-Romanesque basilica in pink limestone standing against a wall of mountain, the cave shrine below it, and twelve kilometres of hairpins up to the Lakes of Covadonga, where Enol and La Ercina sit in high pasture with cattle grazing to the water's edge. In summer and at Easter the lake road closes to private cars and a shuttle runs from Cangas de Onís instead, so the timing of a session is planned around the bus rather than the light — check the current dates before booking. Cangas itself has the arched bridge over the Sella with the Cross of Victory hanging under it. East of there the Cares gorge cuts a path into the rock above the river between Poncebos and Caín, one of the most dramatic walks in Spain and a serious one — a session there uses the first kilometre, not the twelve. On the coast, ninety minutes west, Cudillero is a natural amphitheatre of coloured houses around a tiny harbour, and Playa del Silencio is a curve of pebbles below cliffs with rock stacks offshore. The weather is the trade-off: this is a rainy, temperate coast where the fine drizzle even has its own word, orbayu, and where a wet morning usually turns into a bright, saturated afternoon. May to October is the season; late September gives green hills, low cloud and no queues.

Top Photo Spots in Asturias & the Picos de Europa
The most photogenic locations for your Asturias & the Picos de Europa photoshoot
The Lakes of Covadonga
Two glacial lakes in high pasture at 1,100 metres, with cattle grazing to the water's edge and limestone peaks behind.
Best time: Late morning to mid-afternoon, once the cloud lifts out of the bowl
In summer and at Easter the road is shuttle-only from Cangas de Onís — check the current dates and the last bus down. At 1,100 metres it is cold and windy even in August.
The mouth of the Cares gorge at Poncebos
A path cut into the rock face above the Cares river, where the gorge narrows and the walls close to a few hundred metres apart.
Best time: Midday for light on the river, early or late for soft bounced light on the walls
Walking shoes, not sandals: there are unfenced drops. The car park fills by nine in August, and the path is sometimes closed for repairs — check before you go.
Cudillero — the amphitheatre village
Coloured houses stacked in a horseshoe around a tiny harbour, with lanes and staircases climbing the slope behind.
Best time: Any hour on an overcast day; summer evenings for pink sky behind the tiers
Flat shoes — the lanes are steep, wet and full of steps. Park above the village. The Mirador de la Garita is five minutes of stairs from the harbour square.
The basilica at Covadonga
A pink limestone basilica on a rock spur, with the mountain wall rising directly behind it and a cave shrine underneath.
Best time: Late morning to early afternoon, when the sun clears the valley wall
Coaches arrive from mid-morning and the car park fills early in August. Photography inside the basilica and the cave follows the sanctuary's rules — check before shooting there.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Asturias cost?
Professional photoshoots in Asturias start from €279. Packages differ by length and by how many edited photos are included, so a one to two hour session usually lands between €279 and €450. Because the good spots are spread out, agree with your photographer in advance whether you stay around Covadonga or add a drive to the coast.
What are the best photo spots in Asturias?
The four that carry a session are the Lakes of Covadonga in their high pasture, the pink basilica standing against the mountain below them, the mouth of the Cares gorge at Poncebos, and Cudillero, whose coloured houses form an amphitheatre around a tiny harbour. Playa del Silencio, twenty minutes further west, adds cliffs, pebbles and rock stacks.
When is the best time of day and year to shoot in Asturias?
May to October is the season, with late September the sweet spot: hills still green, fewer visitors, softer light. Mornings often start under low cloud that lifts by midday, so the lakes photograph best from late morning onwards and the coast in the last two hours before sunset. Rain is normal here and usually clears within the hour.
Can we drive up to the Lakes of Covadonga?
Not always. In summer, at Easter and on busy weekends the mountain road closes to private cars and a paid shuttle runs from Cangas de Onís and the Covadonga car parks instead, with the last bus down in the early evening. The dates change from year to year, so check the current rules before fixing a time for the session.
How far in advance should we book our engagement photoshoot?
We recommend booking 2-4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season from May through September when Spain's photographers are busiest with weddings and tourism. For specific dates like Valentine's Day or holiday weekends, booking 4-6 weeks ahead is wise. However, some photographers do accept last-minute bookings depending on their availability, so it's always worth checking even with shorter notice. When you book through Photo Spain, you can browse real-time availability and secure your preferred photographer and time slot instantly. Off-season months (November through March) offer more flexibility, beautiful soft light, and fewer crowds at popular locations — a hidden gem for engagement photography in Spain.
Can we use engagement photos for our save-the-dates?
Yes — this is one of the most popular reasons couples book engagement sessions in Spain. You'll receive high-resolution digital files (typically 300 DPI) that are perfect for print-quality save-the-dates, wedding website headers, invitation inserts, and social media announcements. Most photographers deliver 40-80+ edited images within 1-3 weeks, with expedited delivery available if you're on a tight timeline for your stationery. Many photographers also offer a sneak peek of 5-10 images within 48 hours so you can start sharing the news immediately. The digital files come with full personal-use rights, so you can print them at any lab or use any design service. Photo Spain photographers know how to frame shots that work beautifully in both landscape and portrait orientations for maximum versatility.
