About Cantabria & Santander
Cantabria is the short stretch of green Atlantic coast between the Basque Country and Asturias, and Santander is its front door — about an hour from Bilbao, with its own airport and the ferry from England. The city is built around a bay, and the photographs start on the Magdalena peninsula: a summer palace built for the royal family in the early 1900s, standing on a headland of lawns and pines with the sea on three sides and the beaches of El Sardinero curving away beyond it. The promenade there, the gardens of Piquío and the lighthouse at Cabo Mayor on its cliff are a short drive apart, which makes Santander an easy one-hour session. Half an hour west, Santillana del Mar is a village of golden stone houses and cobbles, closed to traffic and built around a twelfth-century collegiate church; it is best early, before the day visitors arrive. A little further on, Comillas has Gaudí's El Capricho — a villa covered in sunflower tiles — beside a neo-Gothic palace, and San Vicente de la Barquera ends the coast with a long stone bridge, a tidal estuary and the Picos de Europa standing behind the town. Inland, the Liébana valley climbs from Potes into those mountains, with a cable car at Fuente Dé that rises about 750 metres in under four minutes. The trade-off is the weather: this is a mild, rainy coast, the beaches change completely with the tide, and a grey morning often clears by the afternoon. June to September is the season; September keeps the warm sea and loses the crowds.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in Spain?
For peak wedding season (May through October), we strongly recommend booking 6-12 months in advance, especially for Saturday weddings at popular venues. Spain's top wedding photographers often have their prime summer dates booked a full year ahead, particularly in sought-after regions like the Costa del Sol, Toledo, and La Rioja. For off-season weddings (November through April), you'll have more flexibility and may find availability with 2-3 months notice. Weekday weddings also tend to have better photographer availability year-round. When you find a photographer you love on Photo Spain, secure your date with a deposit to lock in their availability — the earlier you book, the wider your selection of top-rated professionals.
How many hours of coverage do we need?
Most destination wedding couples book 8-12 hours of photography coverage, which captures the complete story from getting-ready preparations through the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, speeches, first dance, and party. For more intimate weddings (under 30 guests) or shorter celebrations, 6 hours of coverage may be sufficient to capture all the key moments. Full-day packages of up to 16 hours are available for extended celebrations that start with morning preparations and continue through a late-night party or after-party. When estimating your needs, consider adding a buffer of 1-2 hours beyond what you think you'll need — the candid moments between events are often the most treasured. Your Photo Spain photographer will help you build a realistic photography timeline during your pre-wedding consultation.
Do photographers travel to any venue in Spain?
Yes — Photo Spain photographers cover weddings across the entire country, from the Basque Country in the north to the southern Costa del Sol coast, and even the islands of Tenerife and Mallorca. Travel within the photographer's home region (typically a 50-80km radius) is included in standard packages at no extra charge. For weddings in other regions — for example, a Madrid-based photographer traveling to an Costa del Sol venue — a small travel fee may apply to cover transport and accommodation. This fee is always shown upfront and transparently in each photographer's package listing, so there are no surprises. Many photographers also offer multi-day packages for destination weddings that include a rehearsal dinner shoot or day-after session, which is especially popular for international couples hosting a wedding weekend in Spain.
