Because the coast is spread out, most couples pick one base — Vejer, Zahara de los Atunes or Tarifa — and shoot two nearby spots rather than driving the whole strip in a single session.

Vejer de la Frontera gives lime-washed lanes, arches and courtyards on a bluff above the Barbate river. Bolonia has a thirty-metre dune and the Roman town of Baelo Claudia standing on the beach. Tarifa runs a causeway out to the Isla de las Palomas where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, Zahara de los Atunes gives kilometres of empty sand, and Cabo de Trafalgar closes the day with its lighthouse.

The coast faces west, so the last hour before sunset puts the light straight down the beaches and behind the Trafalgar lighthouse. Vejer works better in the morning, when its lanes are shaded and cool. May, June and September are the best months: warm, long days without the August crowds. Winter is mild and often startlingly clear, though Atlantic storms roll through.

The levante can blow hard for days on end — it is why Tarifa is a kitesurfing capital — and it moves sand and hair around. A local photographer simply shifts the session to a sheltered Vejer lane, a north-facing beach or an early slot before the wind builds. The Isla de las Palomas causeway is public, but the island itself is state property with restricted access, so check what is open before planning to shoot there.
