About Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is the oldest and driest of the Canaries, and it looks it: bare volcanic hills the colour of dust, almost no trees, and sand everywhere. The Corralejo dunes are the first stop — a protected field of pale dunes running for about ten kilometres along the north-east coast, with turquoise water on one side and the cone of the Isla de Lobos offshore. It works at any hour, but the ridges only read properly early and late, when the sun is low enough to draw the lines. The opposite extreme is Cofete: fourteen kilometres of empty Atlantic beach on the far south-west side, with the Jandía ridge rising straight behind it and, usually, nobody else in the frame. Getting there means a slow unsurfaced mountain road that most hire-car contracts do not cover, so the way in is a 4x4 transfer or the local bus — check before promising the location. On the north-west coast, El Cotillo has the Lagos: shallow lagoons behind rock bars that fill and empty with the tide, calm and warm when the ocean beside them is not. Nearby, Playa del Bajo de la Burra is the popcorn beach, made of white rhodolith fragments that look like popcorn and are legally protected — taking any is fined, so leave them where they are.
