About Montserrat
Montserrat is the mountain you photograph from the train and then find is far stranger up close: a massif of pink conglomerate eroded into hundreds of rounded stone fingers, with the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria set on a ledge at around 720 metres. You come up by rack railway or by cable car from the valley, so the approach itself is part of the session. The monastery squares give architecture and scale; the Sant Joan funicular lifts you a few hundred metres higher to bare rock, dry pines and a view that reaches the Pyrenees on a clear winter morning. Below the abbey the paved Camí de la Santa Cova drops along the cliff past the Rosari Monumental — early twentieth-century Catalan sculpture bolted to the rock, one monument worked on by Gaudí — to the chapel built into the cave itself. On the north side, the Degotalls path is flat, shaded and almost empty, with the whole Llobregat valley below. Come early: the coaches from Barcelona arrive mid-morning and by noon the squares are full.
