About Salamanca
Salamanca is quarried out of Villamayor sandstone, a stone that starts pale and turns gold with age and holds the last light longer than anything else in Spain — which is why the city is called la dorada. The Plaza Mayor is the centrepiece: an enclosed baroque square built between 1729 and 1756, arcaded on all four sides, with the town hall on the north face and medallions of kings and writers around the arches. It is genuinely lit at night, so blue hour there — the twenty minutes when the lamps are on and the sky is still deep blue — is the single best frame the city offers. Two hundred metres south stand the cathedrals, old and new joined into one mass of carved stone; the west front is a cliff of late Gothic detail, and somebody restoring it in 1992 added an astronaut and a gargoyle eating ice cream, which visitors now hunt for. Around the corner, the Casa de las Conchas covers its façade in more than three hundred carved scallop shells and opens a Gothic courtyard for free, and opposite it the university's Escuelas Mayores carries the plateresque façade with the frog on a skull that students look for before exams. Downhill, the Roman bridge crosses the Tormes with the whole skyline stacked behind it — the classic wide shot, best in the late afternoon.
