Es Vedrà from the Torre des Savinar at sunset

Es Vedrà is the island's landmark: an uninhabited limestone rock standing four hundred metres out of the sea, two kilometres off the south-west coast. The place to photograph it from is the Torre des Savinar, an old pirate-watch tower on the cliff above Cala d'Hort, where the ground falls away and there is nothing between the lens and the rock.

Everything about the frame is silhouette and scale. Put your subjects on the rocks near the tower and the island floats behind them; use a longer lens from further back and Es Vedrà fills the frame with two small figures on the cliff edge. It is the strongest elopement and proposal set on Ibiza and the reason people drive out here at six in the evening in August.

The sun sets over the sea in front of you, but where it lands moves through the year: in midsummer it drops well to the right of the rock, in midwinter behind and to the left. Check the angle for your date if the sun has to be in a particular place. Twenty minutes after sunset the sky over the water often goes pink and the rock turns deep blue — most people have left by then.

The last kilometre is an unpaved track, and the walk up from the parking is ten to fifteen minutes on loose stone with no railing at the top. Flat shoes, a torch for the way back, and keep away from the edge — the cliff is high, crumbling and unfenced. Cala d'Hort below gives a lower, safer angle on the same rock, with a beach for the rest of the session.
