The Albaicín lanes

Granada's old Moorish quarter, and the answer to what a session does between eleven and five. The lanes are narrow and the walls are high and white, so direct sun rarely reaches the floor — you are working with soft bounced light for most of the day, which is the opposite of what the viewpoints offer.

Look for the carmenes: walled houses with private gardens whose bougainvillea, jasmine and cypress spill over into the street. Placeta de San Miguel Bajo is a small square that stays shaded and has none of the mirador crowd.

It is a maze, and it is steep throughout. A photographer who knows it will route the session downhill.
