About Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the oldest and driest of the Canaries, and it looks it: bare volcanic hills the colour of dust, almost no trees, and sand everywhere. The Corralejo dunes are the first stop — a protected field of pale dunes running for about ten kilometres along the north-east coast, with turquoise water on one side and the cone of the Isla de Lobos offshore. It works at any hour, but the ridges only read properly early and late, when the sun is low enough to draw the lines. The opposite extreme is Cofete: fourteen kilometres of empty Atlantic beach on the far south-west side, with the Jandía ridge rising straight behind it and, usually, nobody else in the frame. Getting there means a slow unsurfaced mountain road that most hire-car contracts do not cover, so the way in is a 4x4 transfer or the local bus — check before promising the location. In the middle of the island, Betancuria was the capital for four centuries and is a green pocket of whitewashed lanes, palms and a sixteenth-century church at the bottom of a valley. On the north-west coast, El Cotillo has the Lagos: shallow lagoons behind rock bars that fill and empty with the tide, calm and warm when the ocean beside them is not. Nearby, Playa del Bajo de la Burra is the popcorn beach, made of white rhodolith fragments that look like popcorn and are legally protected — taking any is fined, so leave them where they are. The island is a year-round destination with wind: constant trade winds keep summer bearable and winter warm.

Top Photo Spots in Fuerteventura

The most photogenic locations for your Fuerteventura photoshoot

The Corralejo dunes

Ten kilometres of pale dunes running along the north-east coast, with turquoise water on one side and a volcanic island offshore.

Best time: The first or last hour of daylight, when low sun draws the ridges

Walk a few hundred metres from the road for untracked sand, and stay off the vegetated hummocks — the park is protected. No shade, no water: keep the session short.

Playa de Cofete

Fourteen kilometres of empty Atlantic beach with the Jandía ridge rising straight behind it and no development at all.

Best time: Late afternoon, when the ridge takes light and shadows run long across the sand

The access track is unsurfaced and excluded by most hire-car contracts — use a 4x4 transfer or the local bus. Do not swim: strong currents, no lifeguard, no facilities.

Betancuria

The island's old capital in a green valley: whitewashed lanes, palms and a sixteenth-century church under bare hills.

Best time: Early morning or late afternoon, before and after the coach groups

Coach groups fill the village between eleven and three. Stop at the pass viewpoint on the way in. It is a lived-in village — keep out of private doorways and courtyards.

The lagoons north of El Cotillo

Shallow turquoise pools held behind low rock bars, calm and warm while the open Atlantic breaks a few metres away.

Best time: The last hour before sunset, when low light crosses the pools from the west

Tide decides whether the pools separate or merge — check it. The lava is sharp, so shoes for walking between bays, and there is no shade on this stretch of coast.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best age for a kids birthday photoshoot?

Every age has its magic. 1st birthdays (cake smash sessions) are hugely popular — messy, expressive, and unforgettable. Ages 3–6 give you toothy grins, big personalities, and natural play. 7–12 work great for milestone moments and group friend shots. Teens often prefer relaxed lifestyle setups over staged 'birthday' photos. Tell us the child's age when booking and we'll match you with a photographer who specializes in that range — pacing, props, and approach all change with age.

What if my child is shy or doesn't want to pose?

Totally normal — and our photographers expect it. The trick is not to ask kids to pose at all. Instead, they observe and react: a kid running toward a balloon, lost in a piece of cake, holding a parent's hand, looking out at the ocean. The best birthday photos are unposed. We pair you with photographers who have years of kid experience: they bring small toys, ask silly questions, and let the child set the pace. Most shy kids warm up within 15 minutes. Bring a comfort object (favorite stuffed animal, snack) — works wonders.

Can we do a cake smash session?

Yes — cake smash sessions are one of the most fun bookings on Photo Spain. Most are done for 1st birthdays, indoor (rented studio or villa) or outdoor (a clean grassy spot). You provide the cake (a smash-friendly small one — Spanish bakeries do them for €15–25), an outfit you don't mind ruining (or one you do — many parents go with crowns and tutus), and a backdrop preference (neutral, themed, or floral). The session captures setup, first curious touch, full smash, and giggly aftermath. Bring wet wipes and a clean change of clothes for after.

How much does a photoshoot in Fuerteventura cost?

Professional photoshoots in Fuerteventura start from €310. Packages vary by duration and by the number of edited photos included, so one to two hours usually falls between €310 and €450. The island is long and the drives are real: Corralejo to Cofete is more than an hour each way, so agree which coast you are shooting when you book.

What are the best photo spots in Fuerteventura?

The Corralejo dunes in the north, ten kilometres of pale sand against turquoise water with the Isla de Lobos offshore; Playa de Cofete in the far south-west, fourteen empty kilometres under the Jandía ridge; the whitewashed lanes and palms of Betancuria in the middle of the island; and the tidal lagoons north of El Cotillo.

What is the best time of day and year to shoot in Fuerteventura?

The island works all year, with winter days around twenty degrees, which is why it fills up from November to March. Shoot the first or last two hours of daylight: the dunes only show their ridges with a low sun, and midday flattens everything. Wind is constant, so a light dress or long hair will move in every frame.
