The Maspalomas dunes in the south are a genuine desert running into the Atlantic, and the most striking backdrop on the island. Inland, an hour of driving brings pine forest, deep ravines and the rock monolith of Roque Nublo. In the north, Las Palmas has the colonial old town of Vegueta and the long city beach of Las Canteras.

In the dunes, the first or last hour of light and nothing else — anything in between flattens the ridges and there is no shade at all. Roque Nublo works in the hour before sunset, allowing thirty minutes to walk in; at 1,800 metres it is cold and exposed.
