Worth knowing when you plan: many island restaurants and hotels close from November to April, so most sessions here are booked between May and October.

Ciutadella's sandstone old town around its narrow port is the architectural half of the island. The other half is coast: Cala Macarella and Cala Pregonda for turquoise water and pine, the Camí de Cavalls bridleway that circles the whole island, the pale Georgian façades above Mahón harbour, and the Favàritx lighthouse on its black slate headland.

The last hour, when Ciutadella's sandstone turns and the coves lose their harsh overhead light. The variable to watch is the tramontana, the north wind that can blow hard for days and makes the northern coast cold and rough while the south stays sheltered — a good photographer simply moves to the other side. Even in August the coves are often quiet at either end of the day.

Some are a short walk from a car park; the best-known ones are not. Much of the Camí de Cavalls is a real footpath with steps and uneven ground, so check which section you are using and wear proper shoes. In high summer, car access to the most popular southern coves is restricted and served by a bus from Ciutadella instead — check the current arrangement before you plan the drive.

Most couples sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, which gives you enough time to visit 2-3 locations and capture a wide variety of natural, relaxed poses and candid moments together.
