About Nerja & Frigiliana

Nerja sits at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, where the Sierra Almijara comes down almost to the water and the coast turns into cliffs and small coves. The Balcón de Europa is the town's centre of gravity: a palm-lined promenade built on an old fortress terrace, curving out over the sea with Calahonda beach and its fishermen's boats directly below. West of it, Burriana is the long, easy family beach — wide sand, chiringuitos, the mountains behind. East, the Maro cliffs are protected coast: pines above, turquoise water below, and small coves reached on foot down steep tracks. Just inland stands the Acueducto del Águila, a four-tier nineteenth-century aqueduct built for a sugar mill, still carrying water across the ravine. Six kilometres up the hill, Frigiliana is the counterpart to all that sea: the Barribarto quarter is a Moorish street plan of white stepped lanes, blue pots and glazed panels set into the walls, and it looks its best in the first hour after sunrise before the day-trip coaches arrive. The season here is long — winters are mild and clear, and outdoor sessions run comfortably from October to May — but August is crowded and hot, and morning light is the answer to both.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in Nerja and Frigiliana cost?

Photoshoots here start from €279, and one to two hours works out at roughly €279–€450 depending on duration and the number of edited photos. Nerja and Frigiliana are six kilometres apart, so covering both in one session means allowing for the drive; many couples instead take the Balcón de Europa and a beach in one session and keep the village for another.

What are the best photo spots in Nerja and Frigiliana?

The Balcón de Europa is the obvious one: a palm-lined promenade on an old fortress terrace, with Calahonda beach and its fishing boats below. Frigiliana's Barribarto quarter has white stepped lanes, blue pots and ceramic panels in the walls. The Maro cliffs give pines above turquoise coves, the Águila aqueduct adds four tiers of nineteenth-century arches, and Burriana is the wide, easy family beach.

What is the best time of day and season for photos in Nerja?

Early morning is best for both towns: the Balcón de Europa is empty before nine and Frigiliana's lanes are still shaded and quiet before the day-trip coaches. Late afternoon gives warm light on the cliffs and on Burriana. The season is long, with mild, clear winters that suit outdoor sessions from October to May; August is hot and busy, so shoot at the edges of the day.

How do you get between Nerja and Frigiliana, and how hard is the walk down to the Maro coves?

Frigiliana is six kilometres uphill from Nerja, about fifteen minutes by car or taxi, with a local bus running through the day; parking is at the bottom of the old quarter and the lanes above it are steps. The Maro coves are reached on foot down steep, unpaved tracks — fine in trainers, awkward in a long dress. The Nerja caves have timed tickets, so check availability if you want them in the plan.

What if my kids won't cooperate during the photoshoot?

Our photographers are experienced with children of all ages and know that kids will be kids — that's actually what makes family photos so authentic and charming. They use games, silly jokes, piggyback rides, tickle attacks, and natural play to capture genuine laughter and real connections. Some of the best family photos come from spontaneous, unscripted moments when a toddler runs off or siblings start goofing around. Your photographer will keep the energy light and fun, taking breaks when needed. Sessions with young children (under 5) are often scheduled in the morning when energy levels are highest. Don't worry about perfection — book with Photo Spain and let your photographer handle the rest.

What's the best age for a family photoshoot?

Every age is perfect for a family photoshoot in Spain. Photographers adapt their approach to suit your children: for babies and toddlers (6 months to 3 years), they focus on natural play, cuddles, and close-up moments in calm settings like gardens or beaches. For children aged 4-10, sessions become more interactive with exploring, jumping, and adventure-style shots at castles or along waterfronts. Teenagers respond well to a relaxed, editorial approach that makes them feel cool rather than forced. Multi-generational families with grandparents benefit from Spain's flat promenades in Sitges or Málaga. The key is choosing a location and time that suits your youngest family member. Photo Spain photographers will tailor the entire session to your family's ages and energy levels.
