Marqués de Riscal at Elciego

Gehry finished the Marqués de Riscal hotel in 2006, dropping a tangle of titanium ribbons — pink for the wine, gold for the mesh on the bottles, silver for the capsule — on top of a working cellar founded in 1858. It sits on the edge of Elciego, so from the approach roads the ribbons appear above old stone houses and the church tower, and the contrast is the picture.

The strongest public viewpoints are on the road in from Laguardia and from the lane that runs below the village to the north-west, where vines fill the foreground and the building sits on the skyline. The titanium changes colour completely with the light: flat and grey at midday, alive at sunset when the pink panels catch warm light.

Elciego itself is worth the walk. The church of San Andrés has a tall Gothic tower, the streets are narrow and sandstone, and from the square you get the old village with the roofline of the hotel behind it.

The hotel and winery grounds are private. Photographs from the public road and the surrounding tracks are straightforward; going inside means a booked tour or being a guest, and a photographer working on the property normally needs permission first — check with the estate before promising that location.
