The Balcón de La Rioja viewpoint

The road from Vitoria to Laguardia climbs over the Sierra de Cantabria, and at the top there is a purpose-built terrace on the southern edge of the pass with the entire Rioja Alavesa laid out below: vineyards to the horizon, villages on low hills, the Ebro somewhere in the haze and, on a clear day, the mountains of La Rioja beyond it.

It is a viewpoint rather than a walk — you park and step out — which makes it the easiest big landscape in the region and a natural pairing with a session in Laguardia twenty minutes downhill. The terrace has a wall at a good height for seated frames.

Afternoon and sunset are the times: the view faces south and south-east, so the light comes across the plain rather than into the lens, and at the end of the day the vineyard blocks separate into stripes of shadow. Autumn turns the whole plain gold and red at once.

It sits above a thousand metres and the temperature drops noticeably from the valley; wind funnels through the pass and cloud sits on it on grey days, which can mean no view at all. Check the forecast for the ridge, not just for the villages below.
