The Tajo from below — Mirador de la Hoya del Tajo at sunrise

From the town everyone photographs the bridge across the gap. From the Hoya del Tajo — the floor of the gorge, reached by a path that switchbacks down from the Plaza María Auxiliadora — you photograph it from underneath, and it becomes a different building entirely: three tiers of stone standing ninety-eight metres over your head, with the ruined water mills on the slope and the white houses balanced on the rim.

This is the frame that makes Ronda look like the pictures. A couple on the path with the whole bridge behind them needs no direction; the walls of the gorge frame the shot on both sides and there is nothing modern in view.

Come at sunrise. The first light lands on the top of the bridge and the houses on the rim while the bottom of the gorge is still in cool shade — a natural separation that is impossible to fake later in the day. By noon the contrast between lit stone and black shadow is unworkable, and by late afternoon the whole gorge has gone flat and grey.

The walk down takes fifteen minutes; the walk back up is a hundred metres of climbing and takes twice as long. The path is uneven, loose in places and slippery after rain, and there is no lighting — flat shoes, water, and a head start on the light. In summer, do this before the day heats up: there is no shade on the climb out.
