About Rías Baixas & Pontevedra

The Rías Baixas are four drowned river valleys on the Atlantic side of Galicia, calm and green, with mussel rafts anchored in rows and vineyards running down to the water. Pontevedra is the base: a granite old town of arcaded squares — the Ferrería, the Leña, the Verdura — pedestrianised for two decades, so a session can move from square to square without a single car in the frame, ending at the round Peregrina church built in the shape of a scallop shell. Ten minutes west, Combarro is a fishing village where the hórreos, stone granaries on legs, stand in a line directly on the shore, their crosses against the water; the lanes behind them are barely two metres wide. Offshore, the Cíes Islands close the ría de Vigo, and Praia de Rodas is the white crescent between two of them with a lagoon behind — the islands are a national park with a daily visitor cap, so both a free permit and a ferry ticket are needed, and the boats run in summer and at Easter only. South, Baiona keeps the Monterreal fortress on its own headland, walls you can walk right around, with a parador inside and the replica of the caravel Pinta in the harbour. North, Cambados is the albariño capital, vines trained overhead on granite posts. This is the mildest, greenest corner of Spain: June to September for the beaches, but the light after rain is what people remember.

Top Photo Spots in Rías Baixas & Pontevedra

The most photogenic locations for your Rías Baixas & Pontevedra photoshoot

Pontevedra old town — Ferrería and the Peregrina

Arcaded granite squares in a city centre closed to cars, with a round pilgrim church built in the shape of a scallop shell.

Best time: Early morning for empty squares, or the hour before sunset for warm light on grey granite

The whole old town is pedestrian, so a session moves square to square on foot. Terraces fill from midday; early morning is the only time the Ferrería is clear.

The hórreos of Combarro

A line of stone granaries on legs standing directly on the shore, with the ría behind them and two-metre lanes behind that.

Best time: Morning for light on the granaries, sunset for silhouettes against the ría

Tide changes the picture completely — check the table if you want water under the hórreos. Groups arrive mid-morning in summer; park above the old village.

Praia de Rodas, Cíes Islands

A white sand crescent linking two islands, with a lagoon behind it and the open Atlantic on the far side.

Best time: The first two hours after the morning ferry, before the wind and the crowd build

A free online authorisation is needed before buying the ferry ticket, and boats run only in summer and around Easter. The last sailing back is fixed — leave margin.

The fortress walls at Baiona

A walled headland with a three-kilometre rampart walk above the sea, a parador inside and the town on one side.

Best time: Late afternoon into sunset on the west-facing stretch of the rampart

The wall walk has a small entrance fee and takes about forty minutes at photograph pace. The ocean side is windy — the town-facing stretch is the sheltered fallback.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in the Rías Baixas cost?

Professional photoshoots in the Rías Baixas start from €279. Packages differ by length and by how many edited photos are included, so a one to two hour session usually costs between €279 and €450. Pontevedra, Combarro and Cambados sit close together, while the Cíes Islands add a ferry crossing that has to be planned into the day.

What are the best photo spots in the Rías Baixas?

The arcaded squares of Pontevedra's car-free old town and the round Peregrina church; the line of stone hórreos standing on the shore at Combarro; Praia de Rodas on the Cíes Islands, a white crescent between two headlands; and the walls of the Monterreal fortress at Baiona, which you can walk right around above the sea.

When is the best time of year to shoot in the Rías Baixas?

June to September, when the ferries run and the water turns Caribbean under sun. Pontevedra's granite squares work all day because the arcades give shade, Combarro is best in the two hours before sunset when the light comes across the ría, and the islands need a clear morning. Spring is green and quiet but wetter.

How do you get to the Cíes Islands for a photoshoot?

By ferry from Vigo, Cangas or Baiona, and only in summer and around Easter. The islands are a national park with a daily visitor limit, so you need a free authorisation booked online before you can buy the boat ticket, and the last sailing back is fixed. Check the season dates, the quota and the return time together.

I'm shy in front of the camera — will I look awkward?

Not at all — this is the most common concern solo travelers have, and our photographers hear it every week. They're experts at making camera-shy people feel at ease using simple, natural direction: walking toward the camera, looking out at a view, adjusting your hair, or laughing at a joke they tell. There's no stiff posing or awkward standing around. Most solo travelers say they felt completely relaxed within the first 5-10 minutes and actually enjoyed the experience. Your photographer will start with easy, movement-based shots to warm you up before moving to more portrait-style images. By the end, you'll feel like a natural. Book with Photo Spain and discover how comfortable professional photography can be.

How many photos will I receive?

For a standard 1-hour session, expect 40-60+ professionally edited photos delivered to your private online gallery. A 2-hour session typically yields 80-120+ images, giving you an incredible variety of looks, locations, and moods. All images are delivered in high resolution (suitable for large prints up to poster size) and are also optimized for social media sharing. Most photographers deliver within 1-3 weeks, with sneak peeks of 5-10 top images often available within 48 hours. Every photo is individually color-corrected and edited — no batch filters or generic presets. The exact number depends on the session length and photographer style, and delivery details are clearly listed on each Photo Spain photographer's package page.
