About Rioja Alavesa & Laguardia
Rioja Alavesa is the strip of vineyard between the Ebro and the Sierra de Cantabria, inside the Basque Country but wine country through and through. Laguardia is its capital and the anchor of any session: a walled village on a low hill, entered through medieval gates, with two long streets, the carved doorway of Santa María de los Reyes still holding its original paint, and a hill honeycombed by hundreds of family wine cellars dug underneath — which is why the streets are closed to traffic and quiet at almost any hour. From the ramparts the vines run flat to the horizon in one direction and hit the grey wall of the Sierra de Cantabria in the other. Two wineries built the region's modern image. At Elciego, six kilometres south, Frank Gehry's Marqués de Riscal hotel throws ribbons of pink, gold and silver titanium above a nineteenth-century cellar and the village church tower; the site is private, and photography beyond the public roadside needs the winery's permission, so check before planning it. North of Laguardia, Santiago Calatrava's Ysios lays a wave-shaped aluminium roof over a cedar wall with a reflecting pool in front and the sierra directly behind. Between them the vineyard rows themselves are the set: green from May, gold and red through late October, bare and graphic in winter. Summer afternoons are hot and the harvest in late September brings tractors and crews into the rows.

The most photogenic locations for your Rioja Alavesa & Laguardia photoshoot
Marqués de Riscal at Elciego
Frank Gehry's ribbons of pink, gold and silver titanium curling above a nineteenth-century cellar and a village church tower.
Best time: Sunset, when the pink titanium catches warm light and the village goes into shadow
The grounds are private: shoot from the public road and the vineyard lanes. Working inside needs the estate's permission — check before you promise the location.
Laguardia — the walled village
A medieval walled village on a low hill, closed to cars because the ground under the streets is honeycombed with wine cellars.
Best time: First light or the last two hours, when the sandstone warms and the sierra takes light
Park outside the gates; the village is car-free and walkable in an hour. The painted portal of Santa María is seen on a guided visit at set times — check them in advance.
Bodegas Ysios
A wave-shaped aluminium roof over a cedar wall, with a reflecting pool in front and the Sierra de Cantabria directly behind.
Best time: Morning or late afternoon, when the ridge behind has shadow and separates from the roof
Shoot from the access road and the vineyard tracks; the grounds are private and entry means booking a visit. Check the winery's photography rules before planning.
The Balcón de La Rioja viewpoint
A pass on the Sierra de Cantabria road looking out over the whole vineyard plain, with Laguardia visible on its hill.
Best time: Afternoon into sunset, when light crosses the plain and the vineyard blocks stripe with shadow
Above a thousand metres and much colder and windier than Laguardia. Cloud can sit on the pass and remove the view entirely — check the forecast for the ridge itself.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Rioja Alavesa cost?
Professional photoshoots in Rioja Alavesa start from €279. Packages vary by duration and by the number of edited photos included, so one to two hours usually falls between €279 and €450. Laguardia, Ysios and Elciego are all within ten minutes of each other, so a short session can still take in a village, a winery and the vines.
What are the best photo spots in Rioja Alavesa?
The walled lanes and ramparts of Laguardia, with the carved doorway of Santa María de los Reyes; the wave-shaped aluminium roof and reflecting pool at Ysios, with the Sierra de Cantabria directly behind; the titanium ribbons of Marqués de Riscal above the village of Elciego; and the vineyard rows themselves, which change colour completely between May and November.
What is the best season and time of day for vineyard photos here?
Late September and October, when the leaves turn gold and red and the sierra keeps its grey wall behind them. Light works early and late: the vines are flat and open, so midday sun is hard and unflattering. Summer afternoons regularly pass thirty-five degrees, and winter gives bare, graphic rows with snow sometimes lying on the ridge.
Can we photograph at Marqués de Riscal and Ysios?
The buildings can be photographed from the public roads and the vineyard tracks around them, which is where most of the frames are taken. Both estates are private working wineries: going inside the grounds means booking a tour, and a photographer working on site normally needs the winery's permission first. Check each estate's rules before you plan the session.
When should we schedule our honeymoon photoshoot?
Many couples book their photoshoot for the second or third day of their honeymoon, once they've settled in, recovered from jet lag, and explored the area a bit. This timing also gives you a weather buffer — if rain is forecast for day two, you can easily shift to day three or four. Evening golden hour sessions are the most popular for honeymooners, typically starting 1-2 hours before sunset for the warmest, most romantic light. If your honeymoon involves multiple cities (a common Spain itinerary is Madrid, Toledo, then Costa del Sol or Barcelona), consider booking a session in the city that excites you most visually. Photo Spain makes it easy to book — simply choose your preferred date and time during checkout and your photographer will confirm within 24 hours.
What's included in a honeymoon photoshoot package?
Most honeymoon packages on Photo Spain include 60-120 minutes of professional photography, 50-100+ individually edited high-resolution photos delivered digitally to your own private online gallery, and a pre-shoot consultation to plan locations, timing, and styling. Photos are typically delivered within 1-3 weeks, with many photographers offering expedited delivery or a sneak peek of 5-10 images within 48 hours. Some photographers offer premium add-ons like handcrafted photo books, fine-art prints, or even a short cinematic video clip. All images come with full personal-use digital rights so you can print, share, and post freely. Delivery timelines and specific inclusions are clearly displayed on each photographer's package page on Photo Spain.
