The Mirador del Valle, across the Tagus, holds the whole city stacked up its hill — the shot everyone recognises. Inside the walls, the Puente de San Martín and its stone arch, the Alcázar and the cathedral's narrow surrounding lanes, the Jewish Quarter around the Tránsito synagogue, and the Puerta de Bisagra city gate carry the rest of a session.

The last hour of light at the Mirador del Valle is the classic, and twenty minutes after sunset the city lights come on and the shot changes completely. The lanes inside the walls work at midday because they are deep and shaded. Toledo is a day-trip town: before ten and after five it is far emptier. Summer afternoons on the rock get very hot.

The square and the lanes around the cathedral are public and free, and that is where most Toledo portraits are taken.
