Barcelona or Madrid for a Photoshoot? An Honest Comparison
People choosing between Spain's two big cities usually ask which is more beautiful. For photographs that is the wrong question — both are. The useful question is what kind of photographs you want to come home with.

What each one actually gives you
Barcelona: variety in a small radius.
Gothic stone lanes, Gaudí colour, a hilltop panorama and a Mediterranean beach, all within about twenty minutes of each other. You can shoot four completely different registers in one session without a long journey, which is rare anywhere.
Madrid: frames that do not look borrowed.
Madrid is not a postcard, and that is its advantage. Nobody has seen a thousand versions of your photograph before. A genuine Egyptian temple at sunset, a palace made of glass, an arcaded square from the 1600s — distinctive, and not the images that saturate every travel feed.
Where each one is difficult
Barcelona is busy in a way that changes how you work. Park Güell's mosaic terrace needs a timed ticket booked days ahead, the bunkers fill for sunset, and the Gothic Quarter is a queue by ten in the morning. Everything is achievable; almost nothing is spontaneous.
Madrid has harder light and fewer options at midday. It sits at 650 metres with dry air, so the sun is less forgiving than on the coast, and there is no sea to escape to. The Retiro carries the middle of the day and there is not much of a plan B beyond it.
By what you are booking
Couples and engagements — Barcelona, narrowly. The range within one session is genuinely useful, and ending on the beach is hard to beat.
Proposals — Madrid. The Templo de Debod is wide open with an obvious place to stand and a photographer can work from a distance without hiding. Barcelona's best proposal spot is the bunkers at sunrise, which requires a very early start. More on planning a proposal.
Families with young children — Madrid, for the Retiro. Barcelona's Ciutadella is good but smaller, and the rest of the city means cobbles and crowds. More on family sessions.

Winter trips — Madrid, clearly. Low sun all day, cold and clear, and empty. Barcelona in winter is mild but grey more often than people expect.
Summer trips — Barcelona, for the sea. Madrid in August is hot with nowhere to cool down, and half the city is away.

Two practical differences
Getting between locations. Barcelona's are close but the journeys are on foot through crowds. Madrid's are further apart but the metro is faster and less crowded. In practice a two-location session takes about the same time in either.
Booking ahead. Barcelona photographers are booked further out, especially May, June and September. Madrid has more availability at short notice.
If you have time for both
Do them differently rather than repeating yourself. Barcelona for the coast and the colour, Madrid for the architecture and the light. Two sessions in two cities give you a far wider set than two sessions in one.
And if you are travelling on to Andalusia, note that neither city compares to Granada or Seville for sheer drama — the big cities are about range, the south is about intensity.

Madrid if you want photographs nobody else has, better winter light, and somewhere less crowded to stand.
