The Best Time of Year to Photograph in Spain, Region by Region

April to early June — the best all-round window

Long days, mild temperatures, everything green rather than burnt, and the sea warming up. If you can only travel once and want the widest choice of region, this is it.

Specifically:

• Andalusia is at its best. Seville, Córdoba and Ronda are warm rather than dangerous, and the countryside is still green.
• The islands are open but not yet crowded, and hotel prices are a fraction of July.
• Madrid and the interior are pleasant before the summer heat sets in.

The one date worth planning around: the first half of May in Córdoba, when the private patios open to the public. Fifteen days, and probably the best fortnight of the year for photographs anywhere in Spain.

Dates to avoid: Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril in Seville. The city is extraordinary then and a photo session is not viable — streets closed, crowds impassable, and every photographer already booked.

July and August — sunrise or the coast

Inland Andalusia in the middle of the day is not a photoshoot, it is an endurance test. Seville and Córdoba clear 40°C routinely.

What still works:

• Sunrise sessions. Around seven in the morning, which is less brutal than it sounds and gives you locations with nobody in them.
• The north. San Sebastián and Bilbao are green and mild while the south bakes.
• The coast, where sea breeze moderates everything. Málaga is far more liveable in August than Córdoba two hours inland.

Note on August specifically: much of urban Spain closes. Madrid empties, and in the Tramuntana and smaller towns a share of restaurants shut for the month. Cities are quieter and hotter; the coast is the opposite.

September and October — summer light without summer heat

Arguably better than spring for a photography trip. The sea is at its warmest of the year, temperatures are back to comfortable, the crowds have gone home, and the light is longer and lower than in June.

• The Balearics in late September and October are the same islands at half the price with a fraction of the people. Deià, Cadaqués and Menorca are all at their best.
• Andalusia becomes workable again from late September.
• Barcelona and Valencia hold warm sea into October.

If someone asked for one month for a Spanish photography trip, it would be late September.

November to February — short, cheap and better than people think

The unpopular half of the year, and it is underrated for three reasons.

The sun stays low all day. In Madrid in December the sun sets around 17:50 and never climbs high, which means soft directional light from mid-afternoon rather than one golden hour. More on timing.

Nothing is crowded. The Mirador de San Nicolás in Granada in January is a different place from the same terrace in July.

Snow on the Sierra Nevada. From roughly November to May the mountains behind the Alhambra carry snow, which is what turns that background from a brown ridge into the photograph people imagine.

The costs: short days, real cold inland — Madrid, Segovia and Toledo are properly cold — and unreliable weather in the north.

And the exception that matters: the Canaries. Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are the only part of Spain where December and January are reliable sun. If you want winter photographs that look like summer, that is the answer and there is no second option.

One thing that overrides all of it

The month matters less than the hour. A session at sunrise in July beats a session at noon in May, every time and in every region. If your dates are fixed, spend your planning on the time of day rather than regretting the season — that is where the photographs actually come from.
