How Far in Advance to Book a Photographer in Spain
The honest answer is that it depends enormously on where and when, and the range is wider than people expect: some Spanish dates are gone six months out, and some are freely available three days before.

The dates that genuinely sell out
Saturdays in May, June and September. These are the scarcest slots in the Spanish calendar because they are also wedding season. A photographer with a wedding that day has no session slots at all, and the ones without weddings fill quickly.
Anything in Barcelona in peak season. It has the deepest pool of photographers in Spain and also the most demand. Three to four months ahead for a summer Saturday is realistic.
Wedding and elopement photographers, full stop. These are individuals with one date each. Six to twelve months for a spring or autumn date is normal, and the well-known names go further out. If you have a date, this is the first thing to book — before the venue, if you have a photographer you specifically want.
Anything tied to a fixed event. Córdoba's patio fortnight in early May, Semana Santa, Las Fallas in Valencia. The photographers who work those weeks are booked far ahead.
Where a week is plenty
Madrid, Valencia, Málaga and Seville outside peak. Midweek, and outside May–June and September–October, a week is usually comfortable.
Winter, almost anywhere. November to February is the quietest part of the year. A few days' notice is often fine and prices are lower.
Weekdays generally. A Tuesday in any Spanish city is a different market from the Saturday of the same week.
What actually constrains the booking
It is rarely the photographer's diary alone. Three other things move first:
Tickets, where a location needs them. Park Güell's monumental zone and the Alhambra in Granada are timed-entry and sell out weeks ahead in season — and the photographer needs their own. The light. Your slot has to fall where the light is, and in Spain that is later than people plan for — sunset is around 21:25 in Barcelona in June. A specific golden-hour slot on a specific date is a much narrower ask than "an hour that day". More on timing.
Your own trip. Booking the session for the last day removes your ability to move it if the weather turns. More on that.

A practical rule
- Wedding or elopement — six to twelve months.
- Peak-season Saturday in a major city — three months.
- Peak-season weekday, or shoulder-season anything — three to four weeks.
- Off-season, or a midweek slot in a smaller city — one week.
- Last minute — genuinely possible in winter and midweek. Ask; the worst answer is no.
What to have ready when you enquire
You will get a faster and more useful reply if the first message contains:
- Your dates, and whether they are fixed
- The city, and whether you are flexible about location
- Who is in the photographs — two people, a family of five, one person
- The occasion, if there is one. A proposal is a different job from a family session.
- Roughly how long you want
That is enough for a photographer to say yes, no, or "not that hour but this one" — which is the whole point of asking early.
