Two Andalusias
Seville and Granada sit three hours apart and photograph like different countries. Seville is flat, golden and ornamental — baroque facades, orange trees, tiled courtyards, everything within a warm palette that flatters skin at any hour. Granada is vertical and dramatic — a white hill of lanes facing a red fortress, with the Sierra Nevada behind it, snowcapped half the year. The right choice depends on which of those two moods you want on your wall.

Where Seville wins
Density of backdrops. Plaza de España alone carries a whole session: the colonnade, the tiled alcoves, the little bridges, the boats. Add the Barrio Santa Cruz lanes, the Metropol Parasol from above and the Triana riverside, and a two-hour session never repeats a texture.
Flatness. Heels, prams, grandparents — Seville asks nothing of anyone's knees. For family sessions and multi-generation groups it is the kinder city by far.
Golden hour on gold. The city is built from warm stone and painted in albero yellow; at the last hour of sun it glows in a way even Rome envies.
Where Granada wins
The skyline. The San Nicolás viewpoint — the Alhambra across the valley, mountains behind — is the single most dramatic backdrop in southern Spain. Sunset there is a pilgrimage for a reason; a photographer who knows the Albaicín will put you on one of the quieter miradores nearby with the same view and a tenth of the crowd.
The wandering. The Albaicín's whitewashed lanes, carmen walls and hidden plazas make the walk itself the session. For couples who want photos that feel discovered rather than staged, Granada delivers.
Summer evenings. At 700 metres altitude, Granada's July evenings drop cooler than Seville's — and Seville in July is the hottest major city in Europe, 40°C afternoons included. If your dates are mid-summer, that fact alone can decide.
The honest caveats
- The Alhambra itself is a visit, not a shoot. Interior tickets sell out weeks ahead, tripods and posed sessions are restricted, and the crowds are constant. You photograph Granada WITH the Alhambra — from across the valley — not inside it.
- Seville's two crowded weeks. Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril fill the city and triple the prices; magnificent to attend, terrible for a quiet session.
- Granada's mornings are underrated. The Albaicín at 9am is empty and softly lit; sunset gets the fame, dawn gets the photos.
Getting there often decides it
Seville is the easier address. The airport is twenty minutes from the centre, the AVE from Madrid takes two and a half hours, and half the old town is walkable. For a weekend with one session in it, that is the pragmatic answer.
Granada costs travel. Its own airport is small; most people arrive via Málaga — ninety minutes by bus — or by train from Seville in around three hours. If you are already on the Costa del Sol, though, it is closer than you think.
For a shoot this means: if you will not spend half a day travelling, the decision is already made. If you will, you get the more dramatic backdrop for it.

Where to stay if photos are the point
In Seville, stay in Santa Cruz, Alfalfa or the edge of Triana: Plaza de España, the lanes and the riverbank are all within a fifteen-minute walk — which matters enormously when the session starts at 7:30am and you would rather not be hunting a taxi.
In Granada the question is harder. The Albaicín is the backdrop, but it is also a hill: arriving with a suitcase, a pram or unreliable knees, you are better off in Realejo or near the cathedral and walking the last stretch up. Ask your hotel about taxi access — many Albaicín lanes are closed to cars, and drivers will stop further down than you expect. The Granada guide maps which viewpoints are reachable without the climb.
Lead time, duration and price
For March to May and for October, good slots in both cities are often taken two months ahead — around Semana Santa and the Feria, earlier still. In high summer and in winter a week is usually enough.
One hour starts at €345 and covers one area with two or three backdrops; two hours — from €520 — makes sense in Seville when Plaza de España and Santa Cruz both feature, and in Granada when the Albaicín is followed by a mirador at blue hour. If you would rather compare people than places, the photographers list what they shoot and where, which is the fastest filter of all. And if the timing is flexible, note that both cities are emptier, cheaper and lit by a low sun from November to February.
