Where the shoot happens
- Templo de Debod. An Egyptian temple rebuilt in the Parque del Oeste, where the ground drops away to the west. Shoot the twenty minutes either side of sunset, with the temple doubled in its pool, and arrive forty minutes early. In winter the sun goes down behind trees rather than a clear horizon.
- The Retiro and the Crystal Palace. A glass-and-iron pavilion beside a small lake, filled with diffused light. Mornings are emptiest; hand-held works better than a tripod, which can draw a park warden.
- Plaza Mayor and La Latina. Arcades run all the way round the square, so one side is always in shade. Early morning is empty; on Sunday mornings the Rastro market fills the streets below.
- Malasaña. Painted façades, small squares and old shopfronts north of Gran Vía. It is a nightlife district, so the morning, with the shutters down and the streets quiet, is when it works.
- The Sabatini gardens. Formal hedges below the Royal Palace, at their best twenty to thirty minutes after sunset, when the floodlights are on and the sky still holds colour.
