The coast is long, so it helps to pick one area — Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués or the coves near Palafrugell — rather than trying to link several in a single session.

Tossa de Mar's walled Vila Vella above the beach and the whitewashed bay of Cadaqués are the two postcards. Between them, the Camí de Ronda coastal path opens onto coves reached only on foot, Calella de Palafrugell has arched fishermen's houses right on the water, and Cap de Creus gives bare rock and open Mediterranean at the northern end.

The last two hours of light are what these cliffs and coves are made for — the pines go dark and the water keeps its colour. Cadaqués works at almost any hour thanks to all the whitewash. The tramuntana, a cold north wind, can blow hard around Cap de Creus in any season. July and August fill the parking and the beaches, so June and September are calmer.

Yes, and it opens up coves that no path reaches. Small boats and kayaks go out from Tossa de Mar, Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués, and a private hire gives you the freedom to stop where the light is best. Book ahead in season and keep a land plan in reserve: crossings are cancelled when the tramuntana gets up, sometimes at short notice.

Totally normal — and our photographers expect it. The trick is not to ask kids to pose at all. Instead, they observe and react: a kid running toward a balloon, lost in a piece of cake, holding a parent's hand, looking out at the ocean. The best birthday photos are unposed. We pair you with photographers who have years of kid experience: they bring small toys, ask silly questions, and let the child set the pace. Most shy kids warm up within 15 minutes. Bring a comfort object (favorite stuffed animal, snack) — works wonders.
