Wedding Photographer on the Costa Brava

Tossa de Mar's walled village above the sand or Cadaqués' white lanes around Dalí's bay — Costa Brava weddings trade ballroom polish for pines, cliffs and real Mediterranean colour.

About Costa Brava

The Costa Brava is the rugged half of Catalonia's coastline: umbrella pines growing right to the cliff edge, coves you reach on foot, and water that reads turquoise even in photographs taken from the shore. Tossa de Mar has the walled medieval village above the beach; Cadaqués, further north, is the whitewashed fishing town where Dalí lived, with its bay and church tower. Shoots here are built around a coastal path and the last two hours of light, and they suit couples, honeymooners and anyone who wants the sea rather than a city in the frame.

Masías, castles and a coast that faces the sunrise

A Costa Brava wedding with guests usually happens a few kilometres inland, not on the sand. The Empordà behind the coast is farmhouse country — stone masías with vine-covered courtyards, cypress avenues and space for a long table — and it has castles to match: Peralada with its gardens and wine, the Castell d'Empordà above La Bisbal. The coast itself comes in for the portraits and, for some couples, a ceremony on a terrace above a cove at S'Agaró or Tamariu.

One thing about the light surprises people: this coast faces east. The sun rises out of the Mediterranean and sets behind the hills, so the classic golden-hour frame is inland — in the Empordà fields, among the medieval stone of Pals and Peratallada — and the sea is at its best in the morning, when a first look on a clifftop has the water lit from the front.

Guests, distances and the day's shape

Most guests fly into Barcelona or Girona. Girona is under an hour from nearly every venue; Barcelona is closer to two in summer traffic, which is why so many weddings here run over a long weekend with a welcome evening in a village square. For the photographer, the useful fact is that the venue, the villages and the coast are all within twenty to forty minutes of each other — close enough to fit a portrait detour into the afternoon without losing the guests.

The shape that works: getting ready and the first look in the morning by the sea, the ceremony late in the afternoon at the masía when the heat breaks, portraits in the fields or a stone village in the last hour of sun, and the dinner under the trees once the light has gone.

Season, and the wind every venue plans for

June and September are the wedding months — warm evenings, warm water, and roads and beaches that are merely busy rather than full. July and August work, but the coast fills and the midday heat inland is real. From October the light gets beautiful and the venues start closing for the season.

The tramuntana, the north wind that blows down from the Pyrenees, is the reason every Empordà venue keeps an indoor plan and every photographer here keeps a sheltered one. On a tramuntana day the sky is scrubbed clean and deep blue — spectacular for photographs, hard on veils and table settings — and the answer is to move the portraits into the lee of a wall rather than to fight it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot on the Costa Brava cost?

Professional photoshoots on the Costa Brava start from €279. A typical one- to two-hour session runs roughly €279 to €450, depending on the duration and the number of edited photos included. The coast is long, so it helps to pick one area — Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués or the coves near Palafrugell — rather than trying to link several in a single session.

What are the best photo spots on the Costa Brava?

Tossa de Mar's walled Vila Vella above the beach and the whitewashed bay of Cadaqués are the two postcards. Between them, the Camí de Ronda coastal path opens onto coves reached only on foot, Calella de Palafrugell has arched fishermen's houses right on the water, and Cap de Creus gives bare rock and open Mediterranean at the northern end.

What's the best time of day for photos on the Costa Brava?

The last two hours of light are what these cliffs and coves are made for — the pines go dark and the water keeps its colour. Cadaqués works at almost any hour thanks to all the whitewash. The tramuntana, a cold north wind, can blow hard around Cap de Creus in any season. July and August fill the parking and the beaches, so June and September are calmer.

Can we do a Costa Brava photoshoot from a boat?

Yes, and it opens up coves that no path reaches. Small boats and kayaks go out from Tossa de Mar, Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués, and a private hire gives you the freedom to stop where the light is best. Book ahead in season and keep a land plan in reserve: crossings are cancelled when the tramuntana gets up, sometimes at short notice.

How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in Spain?

For peak wedding season (May through October), we strongly recommend booking 6-12 months in advance, especially for Saturday weddings at popular venues. Spain's top wedding photographers often have their prime summer dates booked a full year ahead, particularly in sought-after regions like the Costa del Sol, Toledo, and La Rioja. For off-season weddings (November through April), you'll have more flexibility and may find availability with 2-3 months notice. Weekday weddings also tend to have better photographer availability year-round. When you find a photographer you love on Photo Spain, secure your date with a deposit to lock in their availability — the earlier you book, the wider your selection of top-rated professionals.

How many hours of coverage do we need?

Most destination wedding couples book 8-12 hours of photography coverage, which captures the complete story from getting-ready preparations through the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, speeches, first dance, and party. For more intimate weddings (under 30 guests) or shorter celebrations, 6 hours of coverage may be sufficient to capture all the key moments. Full-day packages of up to 16 hours are available for extended celebrations that start with morning preparations and continue through a late-night party or after-party. When estimating your needs, consider adding a buffer of 1-2 hours beyond what you think you'll need — the candid moments between events are often the most treasured. Your Photo Spain photographer will help you build a realistic photography timeline during your pre-wedding consultation.
