The Alcazaba's courtyards and arches climb the hill straight from the centre, and the road up to the Gibralfaro castle opens onto the port and the bay. Down in town: the marble-paved Calle Larios, the cathedral and its small squares, the Muelle Uno promenade with the Pompidou cube, and La Malagueta beach with its palms.

Early morning is best in the Alcazaba courtyards, and the last hour from the upper terraces catches the port turning gold. From June to September the afternoon heat is real and the light overhead is hard, so sessions run at either end of the day. Winter is the quiet secret here: mild, clear and with the sun low enough to shoot at almost any hour.

You can, but plan it properly. The walkways are about an hour north of the city, entry is by timed ticket that has to be booked well in advance in season, helmets are compulsory and the route runs one way, so nobody can linger or set up.
