Málaga: the city version

Málaga is the option for couples who want a wedding that looks like a place rather than a resort.

The cathedral is the anchor — locals call it La Manquita, the one-armed lady, because the south tower was never finished. The small Plaza del Obispo in front of it is enclosed on three sides, which means soft bounced light off pale stone for most of the day rather than the hard shadows you get on an open square.

Above the centre, the Alcazaba climbs into the Castillo de Gibralfaro, and the viewpoint by the parador is the frame that sells the city: the old town, the port and the bullring in one image with the sea behind. It is a genuine climb, so it works for a couple slipping away for twenty minutes, not for a group of eighty.

Marbella and the beach-club coast

When people say a Costa del Sol wedding they usually mean this: a beach club or a hotel garden between Puerto Banús and Elviria, dinner on a terrace, and the Mediterranean twenty metres away.

Two things are worth knowing before you fix the timings.

The coast faces south. The sun does not set into the water in front of you — it goes down the coastline to your right, behind the headlands towards Gibraltar. It means the classic "sunset over the sea behind the couple" shot needs the photographer to turn the group along the beach rather than face it out to sea, and it is the single most common surprise at a first venue visit.

The mountain is the backdrop. The Sierra Blanca rises straight behind Marbella, with La Concha at just over 1,200 metres. Turning inland from the beach gives you a mountain in the frame, which is the thing that separates these photographs from every other Mediterranean beach wedding.

Ronda: half an hour inland and a different climate

Ronda sits at about 720 metres on the edge of El Tajo, the gorge split by the Puente Nuevo, with the Alameda del Tajo balconies hanging over the drop and vineyards at 700 to 900 metres in the hills around.

It is the most dramatic of the three, and the most demanding logistically. The road up from San Pedro de Alcántara is around fifty kilometres of switchbacks and takes the better part of an hour; guests get carsick on it and coaches are slower than cars. If you marry in Ronda, put the guests in Ronda the night before rather than bussing them up and down in one day.

The reward is light and air. At that altitude the evenings cool sharply — by October a jacket after dinner is not optional — and the golden hour arrives later and lasts longer than it does on the coast. Season, heat and the hour of the ceremony

Sunset in Málaga falls around 21:40 in late June, about 20:05 in late September, roughly 19:40 in mid-October, and — after the clocks change on the last Sunday of October — around 18:20 by the first of November. Build the day backwards from that: ceremony about ninety minutes before sunset, portraits in the golden hour immediately after, aperitivo running around them.

Months that work: May, early June, late September and October. The sea is still around 21–22 °C in October, and the light is at its best. July and August sit at 30–32 °C on the coast with high humidity, and Ronda is hotter again in the afternoon; a ceremony before seven in the evening in August is genuinely uncomfortable for guests in suits.

The wind to ask about is the levante, the easterly that brings haze and chops the water up along this coast. The poniente, from the west, usually clears it. Neither cancels a wedding, but a levante week turns a blue sea grey in photographs, which is worth knowing when you are choosing between two dates.

Three things to settle early with whoever shoots it. The getting-ready room — hotel rooms on this coast are often dark with a bright balcony behind, which is the hardest lighting situation of the day. The terrace after dinner — beach clubs go very dark at ten at night, so ask what the plan is.
